There is something special about getting completely lost in a good book.
As a little girl, one of my favorite places was the school library. Every chance I had, I found a quiet corner, opened a book, and disappeared into another world. Of course, I checked out plenty of library books, too, and let’s not even get started on those Accelerated Reader (AR) tests! Lol.
Life looks a little different as an adult.
Between work, family, responsibilities, and trying to balance it all, it isn’t always easy to sit down and truly lose yourself in a story. If you know, you know.
Recently, I decided that needed to change.
I intentionally made time to read again, and it felt amazing!
So welcome to the very first edition of Sabrina’s Reading Corner! In this new series, I’ll be sharing the books I’m reading, my honest thoughts, and the life lessons that stay with me long after I turn the last page.
For me, a great book isn’t just entertaining; it leaves me thinking.

I recently finished Longing for Home by Morris Fenris, and it reminded me why I like Christian contemporary romance.
It had heart, it had faith, it had characters to remember, and it had one moment that completely caught me off guard.
There was one part I was absolutely convinced I had figured out.
I had my prediction; I was confident, I thought I knew exactly where the story was going, then the story took a completely different direction.
Let’s just say I was shocked, but I like the shock.
When I Read, I Step Inside the Story
One thing about me is that I don’t just read a book; I experience it.
As I read, I picture every scene, every conversation, every expression, and every emotion. The characters become real people in my imagination, almost like watching a movie.
That’s why unexpected twists hit me so hard.
When a story surprises me, I feel it.
Judge a Book by Its Cover… or Not?
A while back, I asked a fun question online:
Do you judge a book by its cover?
Now that I’ve finished this one, I have another confession.
The characters in my imagination looked nothing like the people on the cover.
Is it just me, or do you create your own version of every character while you’re reading?
I want to know.
Do book covers influence how you picture the characters, or do your characters become their own people in your imagination?

Would I recommend it? Absolutely.
If you enjoy Christian contemporary romance with heart, hope, and a story that keeps you guessing, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
What This Book Taught Me
One of my favorite parts of reading happens after I finish the book.
I ask myself one question: What did I take away from this story?
For me, this book reminded me that not everyone who smiles at you is cheering for you.
Sometimes the people who discourage us or even try to hold us back are the people we’d least expect.
That thought stayed with me long after I finished reading. It also reminded me of something very personal.
When I was preparing to publish my memoir, Before I Met Him, my husband gave me some real advice.
He said,
“You may lose friends or even family by publishing your story.”
Then he asked me a question:
“Are you okay with that?”
I remember making sure my thick skin was on before I moved forward.
And he was right.
Some friendships changed, some family members weren’t happy, and even people I’d never met had opinions about me.
But at the end of the day, I didn’t write my memoir to make everyone comfortable. I wrote it because I believed my story could help someone else.
Not everyone will understand it, and that’s okay.
What Makes a Real Friend?
This book also reminded me how valuable genuine friendships are.
A true friend:
- Celebrates your victories instead of competing with you.
- Encourages your dreams instead of discouraging them.
- Speaks truth.
- Supports you during difficult seasons.
- Wants to see you become the person God created you to be.
Those are the friendships worth holding onto.
